Jon Katchen & Katy Brautigam of the Holland & Hart law firm received the Ben Walters Award for 2021. Jon & Katy received this distinguished award in recognition of their collective donation of hundreds of hours over the last year representing a survivor of domestic violence in a high-conflict divorce and custody case. Ms. Ruff Soden of ANDVSA (Alaska Network on Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault) stated: “There have been numerous pandemic-related challenges in the case, particularly around trying to make visitation as safe as possible during Covid. These attorneys have worked tirelessly on the case and have assisted this client so much.” Your commitment to public service is exactly what we seek to honor with our award.
The Anchorage Bar Association has given an Outstanding Service Award for many years now. In 2006 we renamed the award the Benjamin Walters Distinguished Service Award in honor of our longtime Board member and friend who passed away that year. Ben was always willing to give many hours to the community in the legal arena as well as simply giving of his time and effort to community activities in general. Whether it was Boy Scouts or the Rotary Club or the Anchorage Bar Association or people in the local community needing pro bono legal advice, Ben always gave selflessly of himself to help others. It is in that spirit that the Anchorage Bar honors someone who exemplifies these same qualities and in doing so we honor Ben’s memory.
